It is an exciting time for kids right now! Everything is new again with the start of another school year. Children are making new friends and reuniting with their old friends too. The new school year brings many opportunities to do new things, and kids are having experiences they have never had before. Homes across the country are abuzz with new energy as families settle back into the school routine. There are a couple of ways that parents can best support the changing needs of their children at this time. One of the most important things parents can do right now is to have conversations with their children about their new experiences and friends. Keeping an ongoing dialogue is the best way to ensure that your children are doing well and staying on track in school. Parents should provide consistent encouragement for their children to make friends and enjoy activities with other kids at school. Young children who are socially active and open to new experiences gain self-confidence and develop their communication skills. Another way that parents can support their children is by learning about their social and developmental needs.

Going to school provides an opportunity for children to develop social skills as they interact with their peers and teachers. Over the course of the school year, they will develop close relationships and bonds with their teachers and other children at school. Social skills are an essential aspect of child development. Social interaction fosters a sense of belonging and emotional fulfillment for children. It also helps them learn how to express their desires and preferences clearly. Preschoolers develop social-emotional skills at different ages, and there are individual differences in the age at which children meet social milestones. Milestones for social development are general guides for understanding when children might acquire specific skills or behaviors. As early as three years old, children may start to take initiative in showing affection and concern for friends. They can also understand the concept of taking turns while playing games. By age four, most children would rather play with other kids than by themselves. They also have an increased capacity to cooperate with other children. By age five, children are showing more independence. They have a desire to please their friends and feel a sense of belonging. Elementary school children have an increased ability to recognize and manage their emotions. They are also learning how to understand the emotions of others and show empathy. Learning to listen and follow directions in the classroom is another primary social goal for elementary school children.

Childhood experiences help to shape the personality of kids as they grow into young adults. As children grow and develop, they will draw on their experiences to interpret and interact with the world around them.

Being open to new experiences provides multiple benefits for children. Children have the opportunity to discover and learn about the world around them when they experience new adventures. Children also become more aware of themselves and others when they get to try new activities. Participating in a variety of novel experiences helps children discover their particular interests and talents. It enables them to find hobbies, sports, or things that they love to do. Finding the activities that a child enjoys contributes to their overall well-being. Discovering their unique talents and skills helps children gain confidence and contributes to the development of self-esteem. It increases their daily motivation and gives them an outlet for expressing themselves. Doing something for the first time also stimulates the development of the brain and imagination. As a child is exposed to new activities and places, their brain is able to take in and process increased amounts of information. The ability to process information is necessary for learning and decision-making. These are just some of the reasons why it is beneficial for parents to encourage their children to try new things. It is also fun for kids to try new things, and parents can appreciate the sense of excitement that their child feels after trying something new for the first time.
