Published Date: 01/05/2022

Fantasy books explore a range of themes while taking readers on a journey to exciting places and worlds. People of all ages love to read fantasy novels. The genre is especially popular with middle-grade readers, teens, and young adults. Imaginative characters such as wizards, dragons, and witches pique the interest of children and motivate them to read. However, parents should consider whether or not their child is ready to read a fantasy book since the timeline of emotional and psychological development varies among children. Some kids may not understand or be frightened by stories that include battles, warfare, and other sensitive topics. Parents can read a summary of the plot and characters before deciding if a child is ready to read a particular book.

Following are descriptions of some of the most popular book series in the fantasy genre:

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling (recommended for age 7-11+)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the first book in the series. It introduces Harry, who finds out that he is a wizard and is sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The book contains some scenes that sensitive readers might find frightening, such as a bleeding, dead unicorn, a three-headed dog, and an attacking troll. There is also a discussion of the death of Harry’s parents that occurred years before.

In the series, a boy discovers that he is the son of the sea god Poseidon while at a summer camp with other demigods.
